Most of us think about mattresses in terms of comfort.
It’s all about soft or firm, memory foam or springs—the kind of thing you spend ten minutes squishing in a shop before deciding. What barely crosses anyone’s mind is what the mattress is actually made from, and whether that’s doing something to your body every night without you knowing. Turns out it’s a bigger question than most people realise, and if you’re in the UK, it might matter more than you’d think.
Poor sleep does more than make you tired.
We all know what it’s like after a bad night. You’re groggy, snappy, reaching for a third coffee before lunch. But keep that going for months or years, and it stops being just an annoying phase. Your body uses sleep to patch itself up, and when that gets interrupted over and over, the repairs don’t happen properly. Skip enough of them, and you’re looking at a higher cancer risk down the line.
There’s more to it too. Running low on sleep winds up inflammation in the body and knocks your immune system about. That’s the system meant to be catching problems before they turn into something worse, so when it’s not firing on all cylinders, that matters.
It’s not only about how much you sleep.
Here’s the bit that catches people out. It’s not just the hours, it’s what you’re lying on for those hours. A lot of older mattresses, especially memory foam ones, were built with flame retardant chemicals baked in. Made sense at the time, fire safety and all that, but some of these chemicals have turned out to be a lot more troubling than anyone realised.
One recent study found a startling link between exposure to these chemicals and cancer risk. That link was concerning enough that it’s important to know which mattresses you should be side-eyeing.
Britain’s mattress rules are stricter than most.
Here’s where it gets interesting if you’re in the UK. Since the late 80s, British fire safety law for furniture and mattresses has been some of the toughest going. Sounds like a good thing, and in terms of stopping fires spreading, it is. But the only real way manufacturers could pass those tests was by loading products up with chemical flame retardants.
So while houses here might be a bit safer from fire, Brits have ended up with some of the highest exposure levels to these chemicals in the world. Stricter testing, more chemicals. Not exactly the trade-off you’d expect.
How did fire safety chemicals end up in your bed?
These chemicals, called PBDEs, aren’t just a mattress thing. They’ve turned up in furniture, electronics, building materials, anywhere flammability was a concern. The problem is that they don’t stay locked inside the product. Over time, they break down and drift into the dust and air around your home, so you end up breathing them in or picking them up through your skin without ever clocking it.
New mattresses have mostly moved away from PBDEs now. It’s really the older memory foam ones, anything made before 2005, that’s the concern. If yours has been knocking about for twenty-odd years or came from a relative, it’s worth a thought.
These chemicals mess with your hormones.
PBDEs are what’s known as endocrine disruptors, which is a fancy way of saying they interfere with your hormones. Things like oestrogen, testosterone, and cortisol are how your body manages growth, energy, and a load of other stuff, and they work by locking onto receptors around the body.
The issue is that these chemicals can jam that lock up. Sometimes they block your actual hormones from getting through. Other times, they trick the receptor into firing when it shouldn’t, or throw off how much hormone your body’s making in the first place. None of that is stuff you’d notice happening, but it adds up.
Mattresses can hide another chemical too.
PBDEs aren’t the only thing to watch for. There’s also a group nicknamed forever chemicals, so called because they barely break down once they’re out in the environment. They’re sometimes used to waterproof mattresses, and they turn up in loads of other everyday products as well.
In the UK, these aren’t regulated in furniture the way they are in some other countries, especially since rules diverged a bit post-Brexit. Most of the government’s attention so far has gone towards things like firefighting foam rather than what’s inside your bed.
Change is coming, just slowly.
There is some movement, though. Regulators have been consulting on overhauling the current fire safety test, since the existing one basically forces manufacturers to pile on the chemicals to pass it. A new smoulder-based test has been proposed, which could mean a lot less chemical treatment down the line.
None of that’s law yet, so if you’re buying a mattress today, the old rules still apply. However, it’s worth keeping half an eye on, since it could actually change what ends up in British mattresses over the next few years.
So, how worried should you actually be?
Don’t go tearing your mattress apart in a panic. Realistically, the risk from your mattress alone is fairly small. Drinking water tends to be a bigger source of exposure to forever chemicals than your bedding, and that’s an area already being kept in check. The stuff that actually moves the needle on your cancer risk is the obvious stuff. Not smoking, going easy on the drink, eating reasonably well. All of that outweighs whatever’s happening with your mattress by a mile.
What to look for in a newer mattress
Shopping for a new one? Try to avoid anything built mainly from petroleum-based materials, plastic, polyurethane foam, or flame retardants like fibreglass. Those are the ingredients most tied to the chemical exposure concerns above.
Look out for a certification from an environmental testing body too, that’s your shortcut to knowing it’s been checked over. Just don’t sacrifice comfort chasing the cleanest option in the shop. Bad sleep undoes a lot of the good you’re trying to do.
