Sifting through health advice online has become an absolute minefield, but misleading claims aren’t just annoying anymore.
In fact, they’re genuinely steering people away from the everyday habits that actually reduce cancer risk. It’s incredibly easy to get sucked into flashy social media videos promising miracle preventions, but this constant stream of bad advice is actively overriding real medical science.
Fresh research released for Cancer Prevention Action Week 2026 reveals just how widespread and deep-rooted this problem has become, showing that these myths are causing massive confusion both across social platforms and inside clinical waiting rooms. When fake news starts dictating how people look after their health, understanding the true scale of this digital epidemic is the only way to protect ourselves from dangerous advice.
NHS staff are dealing with serious levels of misinformation every week.
A YouGov survey commissioned by the World Cancer Research Fund found that 44% of patient-facing NHS staff are asked about inaccurate or misleading nutrition or supplement information at least once a week. For 6% of those staff, it’s happening daily or almost daily, pointing to a problem that is routine rather than occasional.
This matters because every conversation spent correcting a myth is time that could be spent on evidence-based care. It also means patients are arriving at appointments already influenced by information that may be actively working against their health.
Social media users are more at risk of believing false claims.
The research found a large gap between confidence and accuracy among people who rely on social media as their main source of news. While 72% of this group feel confident finding trustworthy nutrition information online, they are simultaneously more likely to believe things that are simply not true.
Compared with people who get their news elsewhere, social media users are more likely to wrongly believe that certain supplements can reduce cancer risk, and more likely to wrongly think that specific foods or diets can starve cancer. They’re also less likely to correctly identify that eating plenty of fibre genuinely does reduce cancer risk, which is one of the best-evidenced dietary habits available.
There are specific myths causing the most concern.
Nearly one in five UK adults believe that detoxes or cleanses are good for health, despite no reliable scientific evidence supporting this claim. More than one in five spend over £10 a month on dietary supplements, often without clear evidence that those supplements are doing anything meaningful for their health.
The danger isn’t just wasted money. When people invest time, energy, and belief in approaches that haven’t been proven to work, they often reduce the attention they give to the things that genuinely do, like eating well, staying active, and drinking less alcohol.
The preventable cancer problem is actually quite big.
Around four in 10 cancer cases in the UK are considered preventable through everyday lifestyle changes. That’s a substantial proportion, and it makes the spread of misleading health advice a genuine public health concern rather than just a matter of personal choice.
When misinformation pulls people toward unproven supplements or extreme diets instead of sustainable everyday habits, it doesn’t just waste their resources, it potentially removes protection that was within reach.
There’s a new tool to help people check health claims.
As part of this year’s Cancer Prevention Action Week, themed Science Not Fiction, the World Cancer Research Fund has launched a simple tool called the TRUST Test. It’s designed to help people evaluate health information before acting on it or passing it on to others.
The idea is to give people a quick, practical way to pause before accepting a health claim at face value, particularly when something sounds promising or hopeful. Information that sounds convincing doesn’t always tell the full story, and having a simple framework to apply can help people make better-informed decisions.
There’s a gap in medical training on nutrition.
Part of the problem is that the people best placed to correct misinformation in clinical settings often don’t have enough training to do it confidently. Previous UK research found that more than 70% of medical students and doctors surveyed had received fewer than two hours of nutrition training throughout medical school.
The World Cancer Research Fund is calling on the UK Government to use the NHS Workforce Plan to better equip frontline staff with evidence-based knowledge on nutrition, supplements, cancer prevention, and survivorship. Without that foundation, staff are being asked to address complex misinformation with limited tools to do so effectively.
What’s already being done to fix this?
Work is already underway with medical schools at the Universities of Lincoln and Southampton to develop practical teaching resources for future doctors covering diet, weight, and cancer risk. A pilot scheme with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has also made the charity’s Cancer and Nutrition Helpline part of many patients’ cancer care pathways, giving people access to reliable guidance at the point they need it most.
The broader message from the campaign is straightforward: when it comes to cancer prevention, the everyday habits backed by decades of research, eating well, staying active, cutting back on alcohol, remain far more powerful than anything being sold or shared online. Getting back to those basics, and helping people trust them, is what the campaign is built around.
