The No-BS Guide To Hating Your Life A Little Less

Sometimes life throws us a curveball, and we find ourselves in a funk.

However, feeling down doesn’t mean you have to stay there. Your happiness is your responsibility, and if you want to change how you’re feeling, you have to do something about it. Here’s how to start loving your life instead of hating it.

1. Ditch the self-help gurus and embrace the art of “winging it.”

Maybe you’ve spent countless hours scrolling through self-improvement articles, trying to find that one magic formula for happiness. But let’s face it, life is messy and unpredictable. Instead of trying to control everything, why not try embracing the chaos? Sometimes, the most unexpected detours lead to the most beautiful destinations. So, let go of the rigid plans and allow yourself to be surprised by life’s little twists and turns.

2. Trade doomscrolling for dance-offs (or whatever floats your boat).

Scrolling through endless negativity on social media can be a real mood killer. Next time you catch yourself spiralling down that rabbit hole, hit the brakes and switch gears. Put on your favourite music and have an impromptu dance party in your living room, or try a spontaneous karaoke session. It seems silly, but it works. Channel your inner child and let loose. You might just discover a hidden talent or a new source of joy.

3. Make friends with your inner weirdo.

We all have that little voice inside our heads that tells us to play it safe, to blend in, to follow the crowd. But what if you gave that voice a break and let your inner weirdo take the reins? Maybe it means wearing that outrageous outfit you’ve been eyeing, or trying that quirky hobby you’ve always been curious about. Embracing your unique quirks can be incredibly liberating and might just lead you to a community of like-minded weirdos who appreciate you for exactly who you are.

4. Swap self-criticism for self-compassion (your inner critic is a jerk anyway).

That voice in your head that constantly points out your flaws and shortcomings? Yeah, that’s your inner critic, and it’s not your friend. It’s time to give that critic a time-out and invite a little self-compassion into your life. Talk to yourself the way you would talk to a friend who’s feeling down. Be kind, be understanding, and remind yourself that you’re not perfect, and that’s okay. We all have our struggles, and beating yourself up about them won’t help.

5. Stop taking life so seriously (it’s probably not going to last forever anyway).

Life is a fleeting journey, and it’s easy to get caught up in the stress and drama of it all. But what if you took a step back and realised that most of it is just a bunch of cosmic absurdity? Find the humour in everyday situations, laugh at your own mistakes, and don’t sweat the small stuff. Remember, a good laugh can be incredibly healing and can instantly lift your spirits.

6. Find your tribe (even if it’s a bunch of misfit toys).

Surrounding yourself with people who get you, who share your passions, and who make you laugh can be a game-changer. So, ditch the toxic relationships and go find your people. Maybe it’s a group of fellow gamers, a book club full of avid readers, or a community of artists who inspire you. Whatever your interests, finding your people can create a sense of belonging and make life a whole lot more enjoyable.

7. Dare to dream big (even if it seems a little bonkers).

Deep down, we all have dreams and aspirations, but sometimes we bury them under layers of self-doubt and fear. It’s time to dust off those dreams and give them a chance to breathe. Maybe it’s writing a novel, starting a business, travelling the world, or simply living a life that feels authentic to you. Don’t let fear hold you back. Take that leap of faith, and you might be surprised at what you can achieve.

8. Say goodbye to FOMO (fear of missing out) and embrace JOMO (joy of missing out).

With the constant barrage of social media updates and the pressure to be everywhere and do everything, it’s easy to fall into the trap of FOMO. But guess what? You don’t have to be at every party, try every new restaurant, or participate in every trend. Sometimes, the most fulfilling moments are the ones you spend alone or with a few close friends, simply enjoying each other’s company. Embrace the joy of missing out and discover the beauty of slowing down and savouring the present moment.

9. Treat yourself like a houseplant (water, sunlight, and maybe a little fertiliser).

We all know that plants need water, sunlight, and nutrients to thrive. So why not apply the same logic to yourself? Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating nourishing foods, and moving your body regularly. And just like a houseplant needs occasional repotting or pruning, don’t be afraid to shake things up in your own life. Try a new workout routine, explore a new hobby, or simply take a break from your usual routine. Sometimes, a little change can do wonders for your overall well-being.

10. Stop trying to be an adult all the time (adulting is overrated anyway).

Let’s be honest, adulting can be a real drag sometimes. Paying bills, doing chores, and juggling responsibilities can leave you feeling drained and uninspired. So, why not give yourself permission to be a kid again? Build a fort out of pillows, have a water balloon fight, or indulge in your favourite childhood snacks. Embracing your inner child can be a refreshing reminder of the simple joys in life.

11. Redefine success (hint: it doesn’t involve a corner office or a million followers).

Society often bombards us with narrow definitions of success, focusing on material possessions, social status, and external validation. But what if you created your own definition of success? Maybe it’s about pursuing your passions, making a difference in your community, or simply living a life that feels authentic and fulfilling to you. Let go of the pressure to conform to societal expectations and define success on your own terms.

12. Embrace your imperfections (they’re what make you, well, you).

We all have flaws and imperfections, and that’s perfectly okay. In fact, it’s those little quirks that make us unique and interesting. Instead of trying to hide your flaws, embrace them as part of your story. Remember, nobody’s perfect, and striving for unattainable perfection will only lead to disappointment. So, let go of the need to be flawless and celebrate the beautiful mess that you are.

13. Learn to say no (guilt-free).

It’s okay to say no to things that don’t serve you or that don’t align with your priorities. You don’t have to attend every social event, take on every extra project, or please everyone all the time. Setting boundaries and prioritising your own needs is not selfish, it’s essential for your well-being. So, next time you feel obligated to say yes, pause and ask yourself if it’s something you truly want to do. If not, don’t be afraid to decline with a polite but firm no.

14. Find your happy place (even if it’s just a bubble bath with a good book).

Having a happy place, a sanctuary where you can escape the stresses of everyday life, can be incredibly restorative. It could be a quiet corner in your home, a park bench with a view, or simply your bathtub filled with bubbles and surrounded by candles. Find a place that brings you peace and allows you to recharge your batteries. Make time for it regularly, and you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel.

15. Give back (it’s surprisingly selfish).

Helping other people can be a surprisingly selfish act. When you give back to your community, volunteer your time, or simply offer a helping hand to someone in need, you make a difference in the world and experience a sense of purpose and fulfilment. The joy of giving can be incredibly rewarding and can help you see the world in a more positive light.

16. Create your own soundtrack (life is too short for bad music).

Music has a powerful effect on our emotions and can instantly lift our spirits. So, create a playlist of songs that make you happy, that make you want to dance, that transport you to a different time and place. Listen to it whenever you need a mood boost, and let the music wash over you and fill you with joy.

17. Remember, it’s okay to not be okay (and sometimes, a good cry is all you need).

Life is full of ups and downs, and it’s okay to not be okay all the time. It’s important to acknowledge and validate your feelings, even the negative ones. Sometimes, a good cry is all you need to release pent-up emotions and start to feel better. Don’t be afraid to show your vulnerability and ask for support when you need it. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey.
