Saying ‘I Love You’ Is Boring — Say These 17 Things Instead

Okay, maybe ‘I love you’ isn’t boring, just a little basic.

Yes, those three little words are ones we like to hear, but after a while, when you’ve been with someone a long time, they’re not as special as they once were. That doesn’t mean you don’t still adore your partner, but surely there are better ways to express that, right? Try a few of these on for size next time.

1. “You make my life brighter just by being in it.”

You can practically taste the cheese oozing from this, which is why it’s so great. You don’t just love your partner, you love the joy and happiness they bring to your life on a daily basis, and this is a great way of expressing that. They don’t even have to do anything special — just being there is more than enough.

2. “I’m so grateful to have you by my side.”

Gratitude is powerful, and we don’t express it enough. Letting your partner know how thankful you are for them being your partner in crime shows how much you value them and could never take them for granted. They’re your biggest cheerleader and a huge part of your support network, and you appreciate them so much.

3. “You’re my favourite person to do nothing with.”

It’s a major compliment to tell someone that you love being around them so much that you could be doing literally nothing together, and you’d still be over the moon. You don’t have to be “on” all the time or do anything to entertain them — simply being in the same space is enough.

4. “I’m a better person because of you.”

You were whole on your own, of course, and you still have a life outside your partner, but their influence in your life has been so positive and powerful that you know you’re even better than you were before because of them. They’ll love knowing how much of a difference they’ve made — and continue to make.

5. “You’re the first person I want to share good news with.”

You could call your best friend or your mum, but no, you want to tell your partner your good news straight away, as soon as it happens. This lets them know just what an important place they hold in your life, and how high on your list of priorities they’ve landed.

6. “I feel safe and at home when I’m with you.”

Expressing that your partner provides a sense of security and comfort is incredibly intimate. It lets them know just how much you trust them and shows that you find peace in their presence, which is a fundamental aspect of love.

7. “You make the ordinary extraordinary.”

A bit over-the-top, yes, but sometimes it’s the only way to express how your partner enhances everyday life. It’s a lovely way to show appreciation for the magic they bring to mundane moments, turning routine into something special.

8. “I’m proud to be with you.”

Letting your partner know you’re proud to be associated with them is an incredible vote of confidence. It shows that you admire their qualities and are happy to be seen as a couple, which will no doubt be a huge confidence boost for them.

9. “You inspire me to be the best version of myself.”

Again, just as they’ve helped you become the best version of yourself, you’re motivated to continually improve because you’re so inspired by the way they carry themselves in the world. They’re always working to become better, and witnessing that is contagious.

10. “I love the way your mind works.”

Appreciating your partner’s intellect and thought processes is a deeply personal compliment. It shows that you value their ideas and perspectives, and that creates a deep connection that goes beyond the physical. Plus, is there anything hotter than someone who’s super intelligent and a deep thinker?

11. “You’re my favourite hello and my hardest goodbye.”

This is a bit “The Notebook,” but if they’re going away for a bit, or you’re going to be separated for more than a few days, this is a cutesy thing to say that will likely make them laugh, but they’ll still appreciate the sentiment. It’s basically pointing out how much you miss them when they’re not around, and that’s sweet.

12. “I can’t imagine my life without you in it.”

While it might sound dramatic, you want your partner to know the integral role they play in your life. Saying this expresses a deep level of commitment and attachment, showing how much they mean to you and that you plan to have them around for a very long time to come.

13. “You make me want to be a better person.”

I know, I know, this is another variation on a theme, and slightly more of a cliché one, but that’s for a reason. It’s one of the most meaningful compliments you can give someone, and it’s one your partner will likely love to hear.

14. “I love the way you see the world.”

Appreciating your partner’s unique perspective is a thoughtful way to express affection. It shows that you value their viewpoints and find their outlook on life intriguing and engaging. It’s one thing to love a person, and entirely another to love their individual qualities that make them who they are.

15. “You’re my favourite what-if that became reality.”

I know it’s a bit cringe, but I’m a softie, what can I say? This romantic statement expresses gratitude for the relationship itself. It acknowledges that what you have together is special and that you’re thankful for the chance to turn a possibility into a beautiful reality. If you can’t be a bit corny in love, when can you be?

16. “I’m so lucky to have you in my life.”

This is simple but effective — you’re aware that not everyone is lucky enough to find someone who matches them so well, but you have, and you’re grateful. Expressing this will make your partner feel like a million pounds, no doubt.

17. “You’re my favourite reason to lose sleep.”

This shows that you value your time together so much that you’re willing to sacrifice rest for it. It’s a playful way to express how much you enjoy their company and prioritise your relationship, and it might even be a bit suggestive, wink wink.
