M&S Launches New Savoury Bakes To Rival Greggs

The M&S bakery has long held a special place among foodies, with its cookies in particular becoming a cult favourite that regularly sells out. Fans of the seasonal Gingerbread & White Chocolate cookies will be pleased to know they’ve returned to shelves as of 2 September, but that’s far from the only news coming out of the bakery this week.

M&S has entered sausage roll territory for the first time.

Alongside the returning cookies, M&S has added six new savoury items to its bakery lineup, including one that could give Greggs a run for its money. That’s right, M&S is now selling its own sausage rolls.

According to the product description, the roll features a seasoned pork filling wrapped in puff pastry, warmed in the oven to create what’s billed as the perfect on-the-go lunchtime snack. Priced at £2.25, though some stores appear to be charging £2.35, the rolls use RSPCA-assured, outdoor-bred British pork sourced from M&S Select farms, alongside an all-butter puff pastry. The retailer has made a bold claim about the product too, stating that no other high street sausage roll comes close to matching it.

How does the M&S sausage roll compare to Greggs?

In terms of appearance, the sausage roll leans considerably more rustic than a typical Greggs offering, with a flakier, more golden pastry that looks distinctly homemade rather than mass-produced.

The taste follows a similarly classic, traditional route, though some reviewers have noted it doesn’t necessarily stand out as distinctly “M&S” in the way other products from the retailer often do. While the pastry and filling quality is generally considered a step up from Greggs, it’s been compared unfavourably to more premium bakery chains known for punchier, more distinctive flavour. Overall, it’s been likened to the kind of sausage roll you’d expect from a traditional, old-school local bakery, satisfying without being particularly exciting. It should also be mentioned that rolls picked up in-store around midday weren’t served warm, so a quick 30-second blast in the microwave is likely needed if you’re after a proper hot lunch.

Several other new savoury bakes have launched alongside it.

Beyond the sausage roll, M&S has introduced two new bread sticks, both priced at £1.50. There’s a Mature Cheddar & Vintage Red Fox Ciabatta Bread Stick, alongside a Nocellara Olive Ciabatta Stick, which M&S recommends dipping in olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Also new is the ‘Nduja & Ricotta Swirl, priced at £2, combining all-butter croissant dough with smoky, spicy ‘nduja, creamy ricotta and hot honey, twisted and baked together. There’s a Tomato & Cheddar Knot too, priced at £1.85, bringing together puff pastry, tomato sauce and mature cheddar. For a vegetarian alternative to the sausage roll, M&S has also launched a Spinach & Feta Roll, priced at £1.85, made using all-butter croissant dough stuffed with feta and spinach, topped with linseeds and described by the retailer as offering the flavours of summer.

This bakery expansion follows M&S’s Christmas food reveal.

This latest bakery launch comes shortly after M&S revealed several of its festive products for Christmas 2026. That lineup leans heavily on pistachio, including a Pistachio Star Chocolate bar, new Pistachio Muddles, and a range of pistachio filled shortbread and cornflake minis, alongside pistachio bites tucked inside this year’s Big Daddy Advent Calendar and a Pistachio and Single Origin Chocolate Bombe.

For anyone less keen on pistachio, the Christmas range still has plenty else on offer, including a festive twist on Percy Pig sweets, a new Malt Balls Selection box, and a couple of new biscuit tins, including Spiced Gingerbread Biscuits packaged in a truck shaped tin, and a Chocolate Chunk Cookie tin featuring a naughty-or-nice elf design. Returning favourites like the Playful Penguins chocolate box are also back on shelves for shoppers who prefer sticking with a familiar classic.

Between the new bakery savouries and the early Christmas reveal, M&S is clearly keeping busy heading into the autumn season, giving shoppers plenty of new items to try well before the traditional festive rush begins.
