Why You Feel Uneasy in Old Buildings, According to New Research

You could write it off as your overly vivid imagination or stories of local ghosts when the hairs on your arms stand up for no apparent reason. However, scientists have been looking into that heavy, unsettling atmosphere, and their findings point to some surprising environmental triggers rather than anything supernatural.

The structure of these old places can actively mess with your senses, creating a physical reaction that your brain automatically flags as danger. New research explains exactly why these spaces trigger our survival instincts and leave us feeling so completely on edge.

Sound you can’t hear can still affect your body.

Infrasound is a type of vibration that sits below the range of human hearing. Anything under 20 Hertz is too low for our ears to pick up, but that doesn’t mean our bodies don’t notice it. It’s produced constantly by things we’re all around every day: traffic, ventilation systems, industrial machinery, ageing pipes in old buildings. We’ve never been able to hear it, so most of us have never thought about it at all.

A new study found it raises stress hormones and makes people more irritable.

Researchers at MacEwan University set up a controlled experiment with 36 participants. Each person sat alone in a room listening to either calming or unsettling music. For half the group, hidden speakers were also quietly producing infrasound at 18 Hertz, well below the threshold of hearing.

Afterwards, participants gave saliva samples, so researchers could measure their cortisol levels, which is the hormone the body produces when it’s stressed. The people who had been exposed to the infrasound had measurably higher cortisol. They also reported feeling more irritable, less engaged, and more likely to experience the music as sad. Crucially, none of them could tell whether the infrasound had been playing or not.

The body is reacting to something the brain doesn’t know is there.

That’s the part that makes this finding genuinely interesting. The participants’ mood and stress levels changed in response to something they had no conscious awareness of. Their beliefs about whether the sound was present made no difference to the results. The body was responding entirely below the level of conscious thought, registering a vibration that the ears never detected, and the brain never identified as a sound.

It might explain why certain places feel eerie.

Professor Rodney Schmaltz, the senior author of the study, made the connection directly. Old buildings, particularly their basements, are exactly the kind of environments where ageing pipes and ventilation systems produce low-frequency vibrations.

If you walk into that kind of space and your mood suddenly changes, you feel vaguely agitated, and you can’t point to any obvious reason why, infrasound is a plausible explanation. If you’ve also been told the building is haunted, the mind will naturally reach for that as the cause. The researchers suggest that a large number of supposedly paranormal experiences in old buildings may have this much more straightforward physical explanation.

The long-term effects are worth paying attention to.

A single brief exposure producing a cortisol spike is one thing. What the researchers are more curious about is what happens with prolonged or repeated exposure over time. Cortisol is useful in short bursts because it puts the body on alert and helps it respond to immediate pressure. However, sustained elevated cortisol is a different story entirely, linked to disrupted sleep, weakened immunity, anxiety, low mood, and a range of other physical health problems.

People who live or work in environments with consistent infrasound exposure, near busy roads, in older buildings, or close to industrial sites, may be experiencing a low-level chronic stress response they’ve never been able to identify or explain.

The research is early, but the implications are pretty major.

The study was small, involving only 36 people, and the researchers are careful to say it’s a first step rather than a definitive answer. They tested only one specific frequency and didn’t observe participants during exposure, only asking how they felt afterwards.

There are many more frequencies to test, and real-world infrasound rarely comes as a single clean tone, but if larger studies confirm the pattern, the findings could eventually inform how buildings are designed and how noise regulations are written. For now, the takeaway is simpler: the next time a place feels unsettling for no reason you can name, the cause might be something in the walls rather than something in your imagination.
