Is there anything worse than people who seem to have no regard for common courtesy or basic social etiquette?

They do things that make us cringe, shake our heads, and even contemplate a silent scream. Whether it’s in a grocery store, on public transportation, or just walking down the street, these inconsiderate actions can turn a peaceful outing into a test of patience.

1. They don’t cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze.

Covid hasn’t gone away, and colds/flus are a thing year-round. A little courtesy goes a long way. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow to prevent spreading germs. We don’t need your bodily fluids flying around in the air, thanks.

2. They talk loudly on their phones.

We get it, you’re important and your conversation is fascinating. But please spare us the details of your personal drama or work gossip. We don’t need to hear about your relationship woes or office politics while we’re trying to enjoy a peaceful commute or a quiet meal.

3. They leave their shopping carts in the middle of the aisle.

Seriously, what’s so difficult about returning your cart to the designated area? Leaving it in the middle of the aisle is not only inconsiderate but also a safety hazard. It blocks traffic and makes it difficult for people to navigate the store.

4. They don’t pick up after their dogs.

It’s not just gross, it’s also unsanitary. Leaving your dog’s mess on the pavement or in the park is disrespectful to people and creates an unpleasant environment for everyone. Be a responsible pet owner and clean up after your furry friend.

5. They let their kids run wild in public spaces.

Children are adorable, but they can also be quite disruptive. Letting them run wild in stores, restaurants, or other public spaces is inconsiderate to people who are trying to enjoy their time. Keep an eye on your kids and teach them to respect the environment and those around them.

6. They cut in line.

We all hate waiting in line, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to cut in front of people who have been patiently waiting their turn. It’s a basic rule of social etiquette that should be followed by everyone, regardless of how important they think they are.

7. They blast music from their speakers or headphones.

Sharing your music taste is one thing, but forcing it on everyone around you is quite another. Blasting music from your speakers or headphones without consideration for anyone else is disrespectful and can be downright annoying. Keep the volume down or use headphones to enjoy your tunes without disturbing people.

8. They litter.

This should go without saying, but sadly, it’s a common problem. Throwing rubbish on the ground shows a complete disregard for the environment and the people who share it. Keep our public spaces clean and dispose of your rubbish responsibly.

9. They block the escalator.

Escalators are designed for efficient movement, not for leisurely chats. Standing on the left side and blocking the way for those who want to walk up or down is a major annoyance. If you want to chat, step aside and let people pass.

10. They don’t say “excuse me” or “thank you.”

These simple phrases are the cornerstone of politeness. Bumping into someone without apologising or receiving help without expressing gratitude can make you seem rude and unappreciative. Remember, a little courtesy goes a long way.

11. They leave a mess in public restrooms.

Nobody wants to walk into a restroom stall that looks like a disaster zone. Flush the toilet, throw away your paper towels, and leave the space as clean as you found it. It’s a matter of basic hygiene and respect for people.

12. They take up multiple seats on public transport.

During rush hour, seats on buses and trains are precious commodities. Taking up more than one seat with your bags or sprawling out when other people are standing is selfish and inconsiderate. Be mindful of your fellow passengers and make space for other people.

13. They don’t control their children in restaurants.

While children are welcome in restaurants, their parents are responsible for ensuring they don’t disturb other diners. Running around, screaming, or throwing food is unacceptable behaviour. Teach your children to behave appropriately in public settings and respect other people’s dining experience.

14. They leave their gym equipment all over the place.

After using weights, machines, or mats, put them back where they belong. Leaving your sweat-soaked equipment lying around is not only gross, but also inconsiderate to other gym-goers. Take a few extra seconds to clean up after yourself and show respect for the shared space.

15. They engage in PDA that makes everyone uncomfortable.

A little affection is sweet, but excessive public displays of affection (PDA) can make people feel awkward and uncomfortable. Keep your intimate moments private and save the passionate kisses for behind closed doors.

16. They don’t put their phones away during conversations.

Constantly checking your phone during conversations, meals, or other social interactions is rude and dismissive. It signals that you’re not fully present and that your virtual world is more important than the people around you. Put your phone away and give your undivided attention to those you’re with.
